Work has recently been completed on a beautiful new landscaped garden, located on the Staffordstown Road, Creggan.
Our scope of works included; Site Clearance, Hard Landscaping, Fencing, Paving, Street Furniture and Soft Landcaping.
The site was the location of the Old School House and it was a nice touch to leave a section of the foundation stone exposed, all under the watchful eye of the Cranfield Cross.
The Cross is the latest in a series of many crosses to have been erected on this spot for hundreds of years. While there is some uncertainty as to its origins, the most likely explanation is that it is a “ Termon” Cross, derived from Irish “Tearmann” and Latin “Terminus” meaning a boundary. These crosses are known throughout Ireland and are associated with monastic settlements, in this case quite possibly with the church in Cranfield. The predecessor to the present coss was made by Charlie Fergus father of Neil Fergus and its remains lie in the old church to the present day.
This project was part of an overall Village Renewal Scheme on behalf of client Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council with the assistance of the local history group. There were three other sites in the scheme, including; Killead, Toome & Moneyglass.
